The application process for the Textile and Fashion Sewing Specialist apprenticeship works as follows: You send us your complete application documents, including your cover letter, CV, certificates and, where applicable, further references such as certificates, by email or as a printed application. Once you have uploaded and submitted all your documents, you will receive a confirmation of receipt from us. After we have carefully reviewed your documents and your application has sparked our interest, you will be invited to an initial personal meeting.

This meeting helps us get to know you as a person, find out whether we are a good fit and whether we share similar values and goals. If the meeting goes well and both sides feel comfortable, you will be invited to a trial day at the company.

You will then get to know your area of responsibility, your working environment and your future colleagues and gain an impression of what it is like to work in the sewing department at trigema.

If both you and we can still imagine working together afterwards, we will make our decision within 1–2 weeks and you will receive an offer from us.

During your apprenticeship as a Textile and Fashion Sewing Specialist, you earn €1,310 gross per month in your first year. In the second year, you earn €1,360 and in the third year €1,445.

The dual apprenticeship at trigema takes place at our facilities in Burladingen, Altshausen and Rangendingen.

You work in production and gradually learn different sewing techniques used to manufacture our products. In the cutting department, fabrics are laid out, cut, fused and sorted. There you learn how to cut and sew fabric pieces accurately.

In the sample sewing department, fabrics are cut by hand and garments are sewn from start to finish. There you learn all the steps required to create the finished product. In the folding department, finished garments are inspected, corrected if necessary and folded.

Other departments include printing with embossing and transfer processes, the warehouse, shipping, goods receiving and the packing department. Among other things, finished products are ironed and packaged there. Regular quality checks are also carried out in the individual departments.

During your apprenticeship as a Textile and Fashion Sewing Specialist, you will carry out preparatory and production work and learn how to operate all sewing and special-purpose machines. You will also learn how to plan and carry out the different workflows.

Some fabrics are cut independently by hand, ironed or fused and finally sewn together to create a finished garment. Your tasks also include adding components such as ribbons, buttons and zippers and changing the machine setup between individual production steps.

This work requires knowledge of workflows, machines, materials, quality assurance and pattern construction.

In the first year, the focus is on working with the machines and sewing textiles. You practise your craft and learn the different workflows as well as how to operate sewing and special-purpose machines.

In the second year, you become increasingly involved in production and work through additional departments such as cutting.

At vocational school, the first-year focus is on textile fabrics and how they are produced.

In the second year, more emphasis is placed on product finishing, including pretreatments such as bleaching, washing and ironing, color-related processes such as dyeing and printing, finishing processes such as impregnation, softening and crease resistance, as well as coating and final inspection.

Once you have completed all departments, you will take the IHK final examination at the end of your apprenticeship.

The vocational school for the academic part of the apprenticeship is the Philipp-Matthäus-Hahn School in Balingen. Lessons take place in blocks throughout the apprenticeship, meaning that after two weeks in the company you will spend one week at school.

In addition to general subjects such as German, English, economics and social studies, vocational subjects are also taught.

LBT (vocational theory) is divided into different areas and covers topics such as the production and finishing of textile fabrics, pattern construction, components used in the textile industry, design and styling options for clothing, as well as calculations and planning for sewing, cutting and costing.

In LBTW (vocational theory workshop), the practical workshop lessons put the theoretical principles into practice and deepen them. This includes sewing, pattern modification and cutting. In the first year, students sew a skirt as a project; in the second year, a blouse or shirt.

Computer applications cover the digital creation and modification of pattern pieces using computer software.

The intermediate examination takes place at the end of the first year or at the beginning of the second year. The written section, which is completed at vocational school, covers content from LBT. The practical part of the examination is carried out and assessed at the company in accordance with IHK requirements.

The written part of the final examination covers LBT, economics, German and social studies. The practical part is carried out at the company together with external examiners, who also ask vocational questions. The product to be sewn is adapted to the respective company.

In addition to working directly as a Textile and Fashion Sewing Specialist after your apprenticeship, depending on your school qualifications you can also attend a fashion school or pursue a degree, for example in design or textile and clothing technology. You can also specialize in textile finishing and pursue further training as a technician.

After successfully completing your apprenticeship, you can work at trigema as a Textile and Fashion Sewing Specialist or as a sample sewer in the sample department. You also have the option of adding a third year of training to qualify as a Textile and Fashion Technician. We like to support motivated employees within our company and offer opportunities for internal further training. For example, you can become a trainer or group leader in production, move internally to another department according to your personal strengths and goals, or complete a third year of training and subsequently pursue a position in areas such as CAD pattern cutting, digital printing, printing or sample sewing.
