During your apprenticeship

Where do you work during the apprenticeship?
As an Industrial Management Assistant, you will take on a wide range of tasks in the administration of an industrial company. You will work through all relevant departments to gain a comprehensive overview and understand how the different parts of the company work together.

You will learn about the different processes and relationships within individual departments as well as between departments. This gives you the opportunity to find out which area of work you could imagine pursuing after your apprenticeship.

The most important areas are purchasing, financial accounting, marketing and sales.

From office supplies to raw materials for production, purchasing covers the entire procurement process. The purchasing department also checks the quality of ordered goods and handles complaints if an order has not been fulfilled in accordance with the contract, for example if a delivery is delayed or contains defects.

Sales and marketing, consisting of e-commerce and advertising, are responsible for selling products to private and business customers as well as the associated sales promotion activities.

Financial accounting is at the heart of commercial operations. This is where business accounts are recorded and managed, results are measured and balance sheets as well as profit and loss statements are prepared.

You will also get to know other departments such as order processing, shipping and goods receiving and gain insights into the production of our high-quality clothing. During your apprenticeship, you will therefore learn about the operational processes you need for your work.

In addition to these activities, you will get to know your colleagues, actively support them with everyday tasks and help plan and coordinate projects.
What do you do during the apprenticeship?

As you work through the different departments during your apprenticeship, you will be able to work independently and contribute your own ideas from an early stage. You can quickly take responsibility for different tasks while always having department managers, trainers and colleagues available to support you.

Alongside general tasks such as planning projects, for example the education fair in Balingen, you will learn a wide range of specific activities within the individual departments:

Purchasing: purchasing goods, obtaining quotations, comparing suppliers, conducting negotiations and placing orders, checking invoices, entering price changes in the system and supporting suppliers

Financial accounting: recording and posting incoming payments such as daily card payments from the test stores as well as outgoing payments such as supplier invoices, regularly monitoring incoming payments and checking documents

Marketing – E-Commerce: supporting the online shop, maintaining products and carrying out tests, gaining insights into content creation and planning for the various social media channels, getting to know all areas of online marketing and, depending on performance, planning and carrying out your own newsletter campaign

Marketing – Advertising: supporting photo shoots for the different collections, editing images, creating flyers and videos, producing and sending the catalog for the respective year

Logistics: ordered goods are packed, invoices are created and parcels are prepared for shipping.

Sales: preparing quotations, processing special orders (embroidery, screen printing, transfer, etc.) and complaints, answering inquiries

Goods receiving: processing returns, creating and posting credit notes and managing the materials warehouse

How does the apprenticeship work?
To give you the broadest possible range of knowledge and experience, you will work through all commercial departments during your apprenticeship.

Each training unit lasts an average of three months before you move on to the next department.

Towards the end of your apprenticeship, you select the topic for your IHK final examination. To prepare for your examination project, you will spend six months in the relevant department during your third year.

The departments are roughly divided across the three years as follows:

1st year: order processing, production overview, test stores, goods receiving, advertising

2nd and 3rd year: e-commerce, IT, purchasing, financial accounting, sales
Where is the vocational school and how often do you attend?
The vocational school for the academic part of the apprenticeship as an Industrial Management Assistant (m/f/d) is the Berufliches Schulzentrum in Hechingen. You attend school for 1.5 days per week throughout all years of the apprenticeship. On half school days, you work at the company in the afternoon. During school holidays, you work full-time at the company.
Which subjects are important during the apprenticeship?
In addition to general subjects such as German, English and social studies, vocational subjects such as business administration, economics and accounting (management and control) are taught. IT is also part of the timetable in the first year.
How does the intermediate examination work?
The intermediate examination usually takes place at the Stadthalle in Balingen. It tests your current knowledge from both the company and vocational school.
How does the final examination work?
Once you have completed all departments, the written final examinations at vocational school take place at the end of the apprenticeship and cover the material taught in the school subjects. There is also an oral final examination at the IHK.

At the end of the apprenticeship, you select the topic for your IHK final examination with support from your trainers. You then give a 15-minute presentation on this topic followed by a professional discussion.

After your apprenticeship

What can you do after your apprenticeship?
After your apprenticeship, you can work directly as an administrator in a wide range of commercial areas. You can also pursue specialist further training as a certified accountant, business specialist or, depending on your school qualifications, various further qualifications in business administration.

If you would like to train apprentices yourself in your specialist area later on, you can obtain a commercial trainer qualification.
What career and further training opportunities do you have at trigema after your apprenticeship?
After your apprenticeship, you can work directly as an administrator in one of the departments you have completed. You can also pursue the further training opportunities commonly associated with the profession, such as business administration, certified accounting or business specialist qualifications.
